Shanghai Institute of Medical Genetics (SIMG)
Shanghai Institute of Medical Genetics (SIMG), which is also named as Institute of Medical Genetics, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, is the first institute of medical genetics founded inChina. It was the former the laboratory of Medical Genetics, Shanghai Children’s Hospital, which was found by Professor Yi-Tao Zeng and his collegues in 1978. Currently, more than 40 staffs are working together in SIMG and the present director is Professor Fanyi Zeng, whom is PhD/MD of University of Pennsylvania. Along with the progress of China’s reform and opening-up, SIMG has developed, in the past 40 years, from an empty room at the very beginning to an up-to-date institute with a floor space of over 10,000 square meters for laboratories. Currently, SIMG has four laboratories, i.e., Molecular Genetics Lab, Cytogenetics Lab, Biochemical Genetics Lab and Clinical Genetics Lab, and a modern large-animal experimental base and an SPF small animal facility, in the Institute. Two key laboratories (Lab of Medical Embryonic Molecular Biology, Ministry of Health,Chinaand Lab of Embryo & Reproductive Engineering, Shanghai Municipality) and Division of Gene Diagnosis, National Center for Genetic Medicine as we as Center for Transgenic Animal Research are also affiliated to SIMG. As the leadership of the State as well as Shanghai Key Discipline on Genetics, SIMG always focuses on the frontier of bio-medical science in view of our national situation, to form a unique research system in which basic research and applied research are combined, and medicine, genetics and embryology are crisscrossed and permeated into one another. The institute has conducted a series of pioneering researches in hemoglobin disorders, molecular diagnosis, gene therapy, regulation of gene expression, transgenic animals, embryo engineering and stem cells, as well as in the process of production, study, and research. It has edited six academic monographs and published over 500 papers, a number of representative papers of which appeared in well-known SCI journals such as Nature、 Lancet、PNAS、Blood、Am J Hum Genet、Hum Mol Genet, etc. So far, SIMG has been awarded more than 40 national, ministry and municipal prizes for major achievements. Among the prizes, the achievements in gene diagnosis of genetic diseases, transgenic animal-bioreactor, and stem cells have been ranked in “The Ten Scientific and Technological Developments inChina”, “The Top Ten News Items of China’s Basic Research”, “The Top Ten News Items of Chinese Agricultural Science”, and “The Top Ten News Items of Chinese Medicine and Health”. SIMG has turned out to be an important, influential medical and biological base at home and abroad.
In its 40-year development, SIMG has forged a harmonious and ever-aspiring team, with a core of old, middle-aged, and young scientists who are either academicians, the Changjiang scholar professors, “973” chief scientists, the new-century talented people of the Ministry of Education and Shanghai “thousand people plan” scientist. The institute has been ranked, time and again, as Model Unit by the state, the Ministry of Health, the National Committee of Family Planning and Birth Control, and Shanghai Municipal Government, and as March 8 Red Flag Group nationally and municipally.
SIMG has been actively participating in international scientific cooperation and exchanges, therefore, it is the first institute inChinathat awarded the Research Grant R01 from the NIH of theUnited States. It has established favorable scientific cooperation with over 40 universities and institutions of such countries and regions as theUnited States,France,Canada,Israel,Netherlandsand Hong Kong. It has successively hosted and organized international and regional academic conferences. Thus, SIMG has made great contribution to the cooperation and exchange betweenChinaand the international academic fields.
“The seemingly impregnable pass, iron-like as it is, is but an easy passage to us, and we shall start striding from the scratch”. Shanghai Institute of Medical Genetics is marching forward toward a fixed target along the road of sustainable development. It will surely play more brilliant melodies of life.
